Men of the world
I find a topic that is literally everyday.
How does the cheese look on your sandwich, what kind of make-up does the cashier have in the
supermarket, what kind of eyebrows does the bus driver have?
I isolate things and draw them in series.
A few months of women: their wrinkles, lipstick, hair fashion.
A few months of food: how are the currants spread in a slice of bread, how black is that licorice.
And now here the men: every continent is represented with the question: how slanted are those
eyes, how straight is that hair.
If you look carefully, everything is enough, all those shapes you can draw. Watching, watching
and recording and sometimes just changing the color to keep it sharp, because all viewing is
determined by your own eyes.
That’s why the colors are not realistic, the shapes are. I don’t draw the African black but red and
the Chinese not yellow but green.
The shape belongs to the world, the colors belong to me.
Mannen van de wereld
Ik vind een onderwerp dat letterlijk dagelijks is.
Hoe ligt die kaas op je boterham, wat voor make-up heeft de caissière in de supermarkt, wat voor wenkbrauwen
heeft de buschauffeur.
Ik isoleer de dingen en teken ze in series.
Een paar maanden vrouwen: hun rimpels, lippenstift, haarmode.
Een paar maanden eten: hoe zijn de krenten verspreid in een plak brood, hoe zwart is die drop.
En nu hier de mannen: elk werelddeel is vertegenwoordigd met de vraag: hoe schuin staan die ogen, hoe steil is
dat haar.
Als je goed kijkt is alles genoeg, al die vormen die je tekenen kan. Kijken kijken kijken, vastleggen en soms
alleen de kleur veranderen om het scherp te houden, omdat alle kijken toch door je eigen ogen bepaald wordt.
Daarom zijn de kleuren zijn niet realistisch, de vormen wel. Ik teken de afrikaan niet zwart maar rood en de
chinees niet geel maar groen.
De vorm is van de wereld, de kleuren zijn van mijzelf.
